Spider veins – also called thread veins, broken blood vessels, broken veins and capillary veins –are small red, blue or purple veins that usually appear near the surface of the skin on the thighs, calves and ankles but can also appear on the face. They look a little like a web or branches. Once you’ve treated the spider veins, they don’t come back, although you might get new ones. They are usually not painful or harmful but can be annoying and affect your confidence when you want to bare your legs or go make up free. What causes spider veins / thread veins? It can be a number of reasons such as genetics, pregnancy, hormonal shifts, weight gain, exposure to the sun, lack of exercise and having a sedentary occupation that requires sitting, or it can be standing for long periods of time. Excessive alcohol intake and genetics can also play a part. We know that oestrogen weakens capillary walls increasing the chance of spider / thread veins. Other causes of Spider Veins & Thread veins are: • Taking the contraceptive pill • Oestrogen replacement therapy • Pregnancy • Ageing & More What is the difference between spider and varicose veins? Varicose veins are very different from spider veins and thread veins. Varicose veins are larger, darker in colour and tend to bulge, they also cause pain and can be related to more serious vein disorders. We are unable too treat varicose veins. Some clients see results after one treatment, some people may need 2-3 to get the results they desire, particularly for larger areas. We use electrolysis.
